Towards a national language: a choice for unity?

Cameroon has more than 250 languages, a richness rare in the world. French and English, inherited from history, serve today as official languages and as bridges between regions. But should one or several Cameroonian languages eventually be promoted as full national languages?

The question is fascinating and delicate. Several criteria are put forward in the debate: the number of speakers, the historical precedence of a presence on the territory, neutrality between groups so as not to offend anyone, or the practical feasibility of large-scale teaching. Each path has its champions and its limits, and touches on sensitive questions of identity and fairness between peoples.
