Independence leader, figure of the UPC

Ruben Um Nyobè, nicknamed “Mpodol” (the one who carries his people's voice), was the secretary-general of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC).

A tireless advocate of Cameroon's independence and reunification, he brought the Cameroonian cause to the United Nations. Killed in the maquis in 1958, he remains a central figure of national memory and the anticolonial struggle.
